Trail stile At fence lines for those pastures, the farmers or trail maintainers build ladders over fences or 'V gates' (a coined name a friend used) with a tight U-turn just big enough for a person, but too tight for farm stock to negotiate. 'Danke, gut', I'd greet them; a bad joke from high school german class. Wie gehts? is a casual german greeting, roughly 'how's it going?'. OK, so I have a dry and twisted sense of humor. These things are intended only for pedestrian traffic, something a hiker doesn't have to remember to close or latch behind them. Here's one example, letting hikers move along and leaving Bessie and friends in their pasture. The farmers much preferred stiles or gates -- the fences wouldn't long survive being climbed over directly. |
