Spiral walk down to Maryland soil

Spiral walk down to Maryland soil

We had this terrific staircase down off the trestle that took us down to river level to the C and O canal. Now, we're in Maryland on the far side of the Potomac River.

We followed the white blazes along the C&O. This is a cintered path, virtually flat. As a boy scout in the mid-70s, my troop had an annual weekend hiking-camping trip on the C&O, a training hike for our new members. Like the Virginia Creeper, the walking is easy. But this was a tow path for horse and mule pulling barges before the days of internal combustion.

Toon and I didn't have to hike too far. It was already nearly dark when we ran into Ramblin' Rich and Mark, the Lithuanian. We all camped on the banks of the Potomac. It was a foggy, spooky night -- fun.
