New York State of Mind J: Good hiking today, alas low energy day. Had a sore throat for two days - hurts to swallow - but nice to cross the NY NJ line for the last time. NY was beautiful looking down into Greenwood Lake. Hot, with a view. Spent a lot of time thinking while I sat watching the dragonflies catching mosquitos. While walking, I had the strange feeling I was back in Carolina. And if I hustled, I could catch Espy before Fontana or wait for Fox. Some of the trail has to be designed with a sense of humor: we went over some really tough rocks just for giggles this side of NY 17A. From my perch, it was clear the maintainers could have simply skirted them -- but where's the fun in that? Made shelter here at Wildcat with only 12 miles. Pretty tame. |
