Sunrise over the distant NH mountains I got up as the black yielded to a hint of blue in the east. Didn't catch the green flash, but the sky and the land put on quite a morning show nonetheless. I had a chance to write a card to the parents of one of my closest friends growing up. Dear Mr and Mrs Philipps, It's been quite a while since you've last hear from me. Hope this card finds you, Lisa, Dina and family happy and in good health. I am on a shelter atop a Vermont mountain just east of Killington, viewing mountains in every direction in that prelight of a late August sunrise. Stunning - words cannot capture this adequately. I'm in the last quater of my first thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mt, GA to Katahdin, ME. Hiking up here was a dream Russ and I kiddingly tossed around years ago. I dedicated the state of Vermont mileage to him. Tomorrow, I'll be almost out of the state, but I see now why he valued these hills - beautiful. This hike, like Russ, has been a very unique and special part of my life. I just wanted you to know I think of him - and of you - often. Hope you are well. -DNA If I knew the Melton's address, I would like to send them a card, too. Craig and Russ were outstanding friends. |
