Jim and Molly Denton Shelter

Jim and Molly Denton Shelter

Naked Hiking Day.

Yes, I did hike naked for the day, with a strategically draped bandanna suspended from my hip belt. I encountered exactly 0 (zero) people. Feeling a little bit foolish, and lured in by the luxuries of this incredible shelter, I called it a day. The Companion mentioned something about a solar shower, so I dropped pack, found my shorts, towel and some soap, and explored.

The day had started in Front Royal. The boys and I hit the all-you-can-eat buffet at Tomorrow's Country Restaurant for $2.99. Killer food. Then got a hitch from Don and his daughter Julie back to the trail head. They were off to a family wedding down in S.C., but saw me hiking so offered a ride. He's a self-confessed long-distance hiker groupie.

A sign further up the trail noted a zoo property line with the warning 'Violators Will Be Eaten'. Some kind of national zoo research facility. A five mile day on a belly full of town food. Stuffsack is full to bulging -- might have to eat into it. 'First, last and always, travel light.'
