Lime Rock raceway Paul Newman's racetrack -- I was surprised to hear the engines on a wet day. My folks had invited me to be pitside at a race in the Poconos last fall. Was terrific to share in that -- the F1 cars are amazingly small. Petite cockpits, very different from the Miller cars my grandfather raced in the tracks up here, upstate New York, Long Island or the Jersey/PA tracks. Those were more stockcar style chassis. Bapa also raced Indy a handful of times, finishing most. No LCD display panels or five point harnesses back then. There's a story of one wreck where he was ejected free of his racer, jumpsuit stripped from him, to land in the lap of a rather large woman. Was that on a wet track? J: Pushed major miles to get beyond Prospect Peak to the shelter with GopherMange. Sunset was a red band across the sky. So front was over but was dark by the time I made the shelter trail. Went down without lamp. Oh boy - had no idea how steep that climb down would be, next to the running creek. It took a half hour to go a half mile. Used to be part of the old A.T. until a relo. Finally made shelter to find six CT college kids taking refuge - out for a weekend. It was dark, wind had picked up, and the temps had dropped to the mid 40sF. Burr! Had dinner, told tales (I broke my silence at dusk), then the eight of us squeezed into the shelter shoulder to shoulder. I was warm until after midnight, then just a tad cold. Didn't sleep well. |
