Sunset approaching Cheshire Reached the Cobbles overlooking Cheshire and mountains west just in time for a glorious sunset. The clouds had broken up and they were fiery, reflected in the reservoir below. Came down into town in the dark - car noises, dogs barking and chlorine - swimming pool smells - greeted me in the early night. Sure enough, a pool on my left as the first paved town road came into view down the trail. A walk into town, past the post office (now a mecca of sorts for us hikers) and to the church that hostelled hikers, or so I thought. I circled the church twice, but it was dark. No hikers? I was sure a couple of N-bounders would be there. I tried the doors - locked. So I sat on a bench in frton of the cheese monument and read my Companion. It said: Hostel: St Mary of the Assumption Church... I had been circling the Methodist church. OK, so I went a bit further down and sure enough, at SMAC, the hostel (on the parish hall floor) was there. Met up with the Canadian Crusaders again (from Bennington -- the irony of staying in a catholic church and their name didn't escape us), Dan Moore was in along with Boots and several S-bounders. Good sleep on the hard floor. Long day. M=21.1; C=1551.2 |
