Happy Hill Cabin This morning finds me camped beside the Hartfort Sign Shop, where Steve 'RTIST' is the proprietor. I came off the hills (Bunker Hill, Thistle Hill, relos from hell), did about 19.7 to make West Hartford. Grew to be a rough walk, 'though the terrain wasn't horribly challenging. I'm 10 miles from NH. Wow!! Came into town last night - found the Deli store open. Owner gave me a chicken salad sandwich - cool! Really made my day. Sat out on the front porch, drinking a couple of cokes and savoring that sandwich. Twilight - and he told me this fella in a green house down the road sometimes let hikers camp in his yard. How fantastic. Steve and Cathy let me stay. Good nights rest to the white noise of a waterfall in his back yard. He's a west coast hiker - sections of the PCT. No more laural in the woods. Clinton's Lily blue berries beginning to fade and fall. The red berry of the trillium going, too. Spruce-fir and birch is the call of the hour, with occasional white and red pine. Forgot about the Montreal express: 10:30 and 5:30 every day. Right on top of the tent! Morning wakeup call - best be pushing on. This is half way to the NH line: oldest shelter on the A.T. A bit leaky. Tenting in RTIST's yard was probably a better option. |
