Lower Jo-Mary Lake at sunset

Lower Jo-Mary Lake at sunset

As the day wore on, the clouds worked their way off. Unlimited burgers and dogs. And naps. Mariner came in. Seuss, Frenchy, Phishstick, and Yeti, too. A Feed-a-thon is like flypaper to a hiker.

This is the first evening in a very long time on the hike we've had such a sky vista. We've been either in weather, or a shelter in the trees for the forest, or a hut. Mispah was the last time I looked out at the stars at night. This was magnificant. Mariner, Seuss and I were sitting on a rock a few yards off shore, checking out the bright band of the Milky Way. Seuss points north - 'hey, now THAT's not something you see from Richmond.' My first ever view of the northern lights. White bands stretched up from the ridge above the lake north shore toward the Milky Way. Captivating. We three sat talking and watching the stellar mystery. Seuss also noted the trees here around the lake are just thinking about changing. The trees in the hills we've crossed have often lost most of their dressings of summer.
