Sunrise, Lower Jo-Mary Lake, Oct 4

J: Sunrise at Antlers Camp.

I remember sunrises from the Florida Keys and offshore of Hatteras sailing. Off of the Lookout in Vermont, too. Wow, I really can't come close to adequately coloring this reality. Rocks and sand of the cold lake shore. The breeze playing upon the surface of the water. Occasional calls from the loons. Feeling a part of this with a sense of belonging, if only as a visitor, but more than a tourist.

Seuss is up, making OJ. 'Cat', one of our hosts, scampers about - full to bursting with energy. Sun's up over the far trees, shining on the lake with a sky half-full with clouds. A breeze comes and goes. Shadows play on the trees of either bank. Fire burns in the BIG fire pit before me. Hot water steams out of the cookpot. A length of galvanized pipe laid across the rock ring with an old oven rack laid above. Coffee pot stands next to the water pot.

The oranges and reds of this grand sunrise have turned to white - warmth on my face from what? The fire? The Sun? Katahdin will have to wait a few hours more. Looking about 'The Camp'; tents and pine needles and a pumpkin someone brought in for the season. The tentsites all have a thick raked-up layer of needles. Padded insulative comfort beneath the tent groundcloth. Sandy paths between the tentpads are edged with round river rocks, swept clean, as is the small beachy area. Peaceful.
