The companion has a story about Grindstaff, who went west after the Reconstruction and made his fortune. Then lost it. Came back home disillusioned to be a hermit for four decades. Died up here, and family put this up. Hermit or hero, we all need to be remembered for just being here.
Hiking the Damascus highway. Fabulous stretch -- I expected a cakewalk, but it was far more arduous. Headed out of the shelter with T.D., up to the dam. Overcast. Up from the dam, up and up... and up and up to ridge top. Rain on and off all morning. Some great views of the lake. Made first shelter for lunch, second for early dinner and two hour nap. Some stayed, but I wanted to try for Double Springs S.
