These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Water ride back to trailhead It was mid-afternoon when we caught the taxi back to trailhead. We had been told the only good camping with a water source for the next 6.2 miles was at a bridge crossing the Silver Pass Creek at the apex of the valley dead ahead. If we wanted to make the next good camping, we'd have to hoof it up a 2300 ft climb. We weren't really looking forward to the climb, being fat with all the food we could stuff in during our day at Vermillion. Thomas Edison Lake is at about 7600 ft. |
