John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Bubbs Creek
White water on the creek. We hadn't seen much wildlife in the past two weeks, and were wondering if they were more timid around humans away from the habitulizing effects of the heavily travelled parks.
Even though we hadn't felt threatened since that second night out, Solophile and I still found ourselves resting, eating meals, and just talking face to face, where we could also watch each others back. Its a weird feeling for an east coast hiker, to feel enough a part of the food chain to keep so alert.
