John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Rae Lakes Camp
The clouds stopped dripping on us, but they continued to look threatening. Our hiking style was to try to make our camp at the base of whatever hardest part of the next day presented. That was usually a pass or big climb. Since Rae Lakes was at the base of Glen Pass, it was time for us to find our perfect camp. Here, we had a great view of Painted Lady, Dragon Peak and some rock protection from the wind. Amazingly, the mosquitoes were absolutely tolerable, too. It was a great camp.
Rae Lakes elevation: 10541 where we stayed.
