John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Bearbagging at Silver Pass Creek
By the time we got to the bridge, loaded down with our reprovisions and still-full stomachs, we knew we wouldn't make the 6 miles to the upper reachs of Bear Creek. We had heard there was some bear activity in the area, but had not seen bearsign during our descent from Silver Pass. Then, this bridge appeared. It was too inviting. Reruns and I spent some time engineering bearbag lines, but when we finished, we were certain no bear could reach either bag
Solophile stands atop the bridge with our surplus food bearbags suspended beneath.
