John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Looking up Bubbs Creek valley
We had passed Charlotte Lake and came to a meadow. There were several trail junctions, and on one post, a very earnest warning of aggressive bears in the area. Crossing back into the woods and around a hillside, the forest opened up to this view. This is Bubbs Creek Valley. The large dark mountain in the middle is Center Peak. Forester Pass is at the end of the valley just to its right. It didn't look all that far away, and suddenly we sensed the end of our trek. After Forester, it was only a few days to Whitney. The days had flown by.
This view is from the trail descent next to the Kearsarge Pinnacles, 8.5 trail miles from Forester Pass.
