These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Ward Mountain - Muir Trail Ranch Somewhere down there is the Muir Trail Ranch. The trail heads down more switchbacks from here -- off to the left of the photo. This was the driest part of the hike we experienced -- only the five miles or so this side of the Piute Creek Bridge (another excellent backwoods construction feat). I'm repeating myself, but water always matters to a hiker, so we were carrying a few liters apiece. By the time we reached the bridge, we were ready for a 20 minute break -- simply filtering the water and drinking from the fill tube. Viewing SW, Florence Lake is just up the valley. |
