John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Marie Lake
August 26: Beautiful Lake, nice campsites -- at treeline so we thought we'd camp here. By the time we got to the opposite side of the lake, the mosquitoes came out. This was perhaps tied with Tully Hole for the worse mosquitoes we've ever experienced. It was horrific, made only marginally better in that we had already eaten and only needed to set up camp before we could get inside the tent. Once inside, we spent the rest of the evening before dark squashing mosquitoes that had jumped in with us before we zippered the fly. It was a fierce battle.
10551 ft. The reader might think we're over-blowing the mosquitoe thing. Trust me, we're underplaying it. At one point on trail, Solophile offered another hiker $20 for their headnet.
