John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

Tuolumne Meadows: night 4 with bears
This bruno got two chances at food on an open bearbox. Amazingly, one tourist left his gear to get poached TWICE. All he had to do was close up his bearbox, but either inexperience or ignorance lead to the unfortunate encounter. The bear was apparently a regular at the camp, as he prowled through two other areas even after having been chased out of our camp. He would eventually be treed near a bathhouse before being run off for the night. On our walk into Tuolumne, frequent patches of safety glass along the roadwalk parking indicated bears at work.
Bears have learned how easy it is to poach human food. Not only from sealed cars, but from poorly-hung food bags, unattended camps, and most often careless campers. The Park Service have a 3-strikes program. Bears perceived as 'problems' are tagged and relocated. If they continue to pose a problem to humans after the third capture, they are often killed. I thought this moron camper should have been the one tagged and relocated.
