John Muir Trail, 1998 Thru Hike These images are from our thru-hike of the JMT in 98. We hiked from August 16 through September 3, southbound. The hike took 18 days to complete, covering about 220 miles. Solophile and I are indebted to Big Bird (of AT 97 fame) for the splendid hospitality in the Bay City, the time he took off to be our personal tour guide, and the great hitch out to Yosemite.

On the loop trail in Happy Isles
Happy Isles is the entry point to the south of the campgrounds in the valley. Along with the nature center, the parking lot sports a graphic display of how easily a black bear can peel a car door back to get at a candy bar on the front seat of a Chevy sedan. Think sardine can -- it was that easy. Powerful animals.
(The bears can reportedly sniff out candy, opened beer, sandwiches or even chewing gum, and will raid food bags, tents, and obviously cars to obtain their treats. Makes Yogi look like an amateur.)
